This Fall had to be one of the nicest we’ve had in Bozeman. Great colors and plenty of sunshine. We usually go from summer to winter in the blink of an eye. Last year, the snow came in October when the leaves were still on the trees, leaving a sickly, blackened mess. This year we’ve had a few waves of cooler weather, along with a skiff of snow here and there. But, for the most part, the temperatures slowly dropped as the days got shorter. Before we knew it the sun was tracing a low arc across the southern sky and we were scraping frost off the windshield.
All that changed this week. Thursday noon clocked around 42 degrees on the thermometer and the sun was out. At four the first flakes started falling, and by five we already had 4 inches on the ground. By eight it was all over. A fast eight inches.
Now the boat is all wrapped up until springtime. The heat is on in the shop and I’m busy making sawdust on a new project (more on that later). Right now the challenge is keeping the car on the road. Or, since we already have our winter tires on, avoiding everyone who has not made the change.

Not envious. Seventy degrees here yesterday, and sunny. Should have been sailing. Will your next project be laminated wooden skis? A toboggan?

70! You should have been sailing. Back up to the mid-40s today so no real hardship. I have actually looked at making custom wood skis. There are, of course, some great “how to” web sites out there. Cool laminating presses using old fire hoses, pumps, valves, etc. I think building the press is actually more difficult than building the ski itself!
