More peak bagging and fishing in Colorado.  Here’s a list of places visited.  With the exception of Big Sandy Recreation Area in Wyoming, all other locations are in Colorado.

  • Big Sandy Recreation Area, Wyoming
  • Ouray, mostly just hitting the hot springs in town
  • Black Canyon of the Gunnison River.  Here we camped in the BLM Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area.  We hiked in the Ute Trail and fished for a day down in the canyon.
  • Lake City.  We drove up Engineer Pass one day and climbed Uncompagre Peak the next.
  • San Luis Mountains and the La Garita Wilderness.  This area is due east of Lake City and due north of Creede.  It is the home of San Luis Peak, the most remote of the Colorado 14ers, and a slew of wonderful little creeks with lots of hungry brook trout.  We climbed Stewart Peak and Baldy Alto, both high 13ers just north of San Luis Peak.
  • La Jara Creek.  A great fishing stream, though this trip was not all that productive.
  • Cochatope State Wildlife Area.  We backtracked towards Gunnison to a State Wildlife Area that we passed as we left the Stewart Peak area.  Cochatope has miles of wonderful meandering meadow streams on both Cochatope and Los Pinos Creeks.
  • Buena Vista Area.  Here we had a big day climbing Belford, Oxford and Missouri in one day.  A 3:30 AM rise, but a fantastic trio of peaks.  Some lounging at Cottonwood Hot Springs was a nice recovery day before finally climbing Huron Peak on our final day.
Enjoy!
