Size Matters

Don’t let anyone tell you differently, size does matter!

OK, now get your minds out of the gutter, I’m talking about my headstock inlay.

I’ve used this logo for a few years now, but only as an inlay in my wooden surfboards.  On the boards, the logo is about 4″ across.  I have a set of templates that I use to cut both the inlay and the cavity.  From start to finish, an inlay in a surfboard takes about 15 minutes.

In contrast, the headstock inlay is only an inch across.  The Mother of Pearl material is only 0.05″ thick.  And it took me about 4 hours of careful sawing and then filing with needle files to complete the inlay.  Here is the sequence from start to finish.  It should show nicely once the black lacquer is applied to the headstock face.
